a las barricadas

Cesare Battisti - given political asylum by Brasil

Cesare Battisti was a member of the Proletari Armati per il comunismo (PAC, Armed Proletarians for communism), a far left group which supported violent revolution and performed armed actions against the state during the anni di piombo (years of lead) in Italy, when a number of armed groups was acting in Italy. He was condemned to have committed four murders in Italy in the 70s, but has always denied them.

He fled to France, as other italian activists at the time, due to the fact that the Mitterand doctrine accepted as political refugees the people condemned in Italy during the years of lead, and therefore were not handed back to Italy, where they would be sent to prison. In France Cesare Battisti wrote several novels, as well as a semi-autobiographical book, The last bullets. In 2002 the Mitterand doctrine was canceled, and fled out of France. He was arrested in Rio de Janeiro in 2007 by brasilian and french police. Since then Battisti was held in a prison in Brasilia, but yesterday 13/01/2009, the brasilian government announced the decision of the minister of justice, Tarso Gento, to consider Battisti as a political refugee and therefore to let him live free in Brazil. His release will take place next week.

Gento made use of the argument of established fear of prosecution for one's political ideas, in order to use the law about the political refugees. Gento said that it is normal and expected that in moments of extreme social and political tension, clandestine and parallel mechanisms that give legal authority to their own selves begin to function. [...] Battisti was condemned due to the testimony against him by his ex-companion, Pietro Mutti, who was awarded for his testimony but provided no proof. To the brasilian press, Gento said that the context in which the alleged homicides occurred, the conditions under which the trials were carried out, with the complete impossibility of having a real defense due to the radicalization of the political situation in Italy, generate serious doubts about whether the accused had the right to a fair and equal trial. Finally Gento said that his reasons of assigning political asylum to Battisti are motivated by the judiciary system itself: We cannot let exceptions occurring; Brasil has given political asylum to the former dictator of Paraguay, Stroessner, and he certainly did not perform less violence than Battisti..

Concerning the affect to the diplomatic relations with Italy, the secretary of legislative affairs of the ministry of justice Romeu Tuma Junior said that the matter is above partisan political analysis. Nevertheless, the italian ministry of foreign affairs asked the brasilian prime minister Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to reconsider the political asylum ro Battisti, announcing that they are disappointed by the decision of the brasilian government. Romeu Tuma Junior replied that it has to be understood that a decision for political asylum is the decision of a country with respect to a person; it is not a decision in favor or against another country.

From today on, I have no doubt: Greece is under a dictatorship regime. Nowadays in the streets in the area of Exarchia, Athens, the policemen are about to be more than the people walking around. On certain nights policemen enter bars, cafes or apartments, they search for anything that could potentially used as a weapon, and arrest people simply for their presence in Exarchia.

After the panhellenic mass demonstrations against the mass demonstrations for education and against the police violence, which were not accompanied by any violent side-events by the demonstrators, the police special forces attempted to arrest groups of demonstrators for NO reason.

In particular, in Athens, a group of the demonstrators were ruled out in Aeschylus St. The policemen started by attacking an old lady, so that the common sense arouses people to react. The people who were about to be arrested entered a small shop, whose owner called forth the police to arrest him instead of the young students in his shop. Other people followed his example and asked the policemen: "How many arrests did they order you for today? We will gather as many as you want, but let the rest of the kids go away." Some lawyers who arrived to Aeschylus St. to help the people embattled in the little shop told the policemen that what they attempted to do was illegal, i.e. to arrest people without them having done anything.

The policemen did not reply back neither to the people who were asking to be arrested instead of the demonstrators nor to the lawyers. Of course. No single space for critical thinking. Just following orders.

Those incidents are shown in the video embedded above. Unfortunately there are no english subtitles. If i find the actual video (and not only embedded), I will be able to put subtitles on ym own. In this case or if I find the video with subtitles, I will update the link.

Israeli attack on Gaza

Last Saturday Israel started attacking fragmented Palestina. Since then and until yesterday night, 400 Palestinians are dead and 2,000 Palestinians have been injured by the Israeli war machine. The reason is the same as always: the Palestinian resistance towards the oppression and the tearing into pieces of their land by Israel.

The western politicians announce that the responsibility for the gradation of violence in Gaza lies on Hamas alone (Angela Merkell, Ναυτεμπορική). At the same time the media only show the fireworks for the new year's eve. They will not bother the average citizen by references to the 450 cars that were burnt yesterday night in the suburbs of french cities (from the Independent). Neither will there be any mention to the manifestations that took place in greek cities in solidarity to Palestine, prisoners, and against the state violence, nor to the fires set to cars and banks (from IMC Athens).

Hence the average citizen will be left to happily pass to the new year, with no worries, since he/she owns a credit card which will help him/her disown his/her existence. Whoever still belongs to him/her own self can see what the massacre of the palestinians looks like at IMC UK.
